“I started by making a mark with a small square oil brush on the boards. The repetition of the mark motivated me. Then I tried different brushes, making individual marks that had an interesting rhythm and that I could handle like a written language. It took me a while to understand what I was doing, because the marks “They had little connection with my previous work. But at some point I realized that the small elliptical shapes were part of a fresh visual language, and each composition contained an undeciphered code.”
