Ghost Structures (Ghost Structures 1)
Work from the NO-STRUCTURES series
The first time I saw this three-storey building in a prime location in Shoreditch I knew it was destined to disappear. The building was surrounded by a car park and graffitied on both sides. On the ground floor there was a bazaar selling bags and suitcases, and to one side there was a car wash. The building was demolished to make way for 'Shoreditch Exchange', a set of 6 mixed-use towers with apartments and shops.
After being wrapped, the demolition took 2 weeks. The wrapping is used to prevent dust from flying and debris from falling onto the sidewalk. The way this building was wrapped is very curious, however. At an exhibition, someone told me that they found the wrapping to be sensual, that it gave a glimpse of what was behind the cloth without completely revealing the secret.
Other editions of this photograph have been exhibited at Ekho Gallery, Santiago and Velorose, London, and have been published in The Guardian, Archdaily, Plot, Panorama, Greyscape and Architecture NZ.
